Secretaries Report
It does not seem like more than a few weeks ago that I wrote my last
report but when I look at what has happened in the society I realize just how
fast time goes when your getting
on.
The year opened with the annual dinner at Milnthorpe which seemed to go down
fairly well Frank Taylor won the biggest prize in the raffle and Wendy Kenyon
the coin roll.
The society honoured Jack Gott with the Affiliated Society Silver Medal it is
well deserved Jack we are all grateful for the huge amount of work you put in
on behalf of the Society.
February saw George Towler running an interesting quiz but numbers attending
were very poor.
March and members were at the Northern AGM at Sandbach and at to the
dinner afterwards the Society always has the largest number at the dinner and
Frank Taylor gave us another excellent lecture.
April Geoff Gardiner showed us how to propagate and take cutting high up in
the top stories of a large Victorian property in Darlington.
The following month we held our customary plant sale at the Hilltop Nursery
the number of members attending could be improved upon as their were only 12
of us turned up.
August the Society attended the Amblside Show and thanks to Jimmy Heginbottom,
Jack Gott George Towler and Fred Currie we were rewarded with a Gold Medal.
September we held our Annual show but we could certainly do with a few more
exhibitors list of winners further on, we also visited Leeds Trial Grounds but
only 5 members turned out for this excellent day.
October and Andy Jamieson gave us an excellent lecture (covered elsewhere).
November and Ron Rimmer showed us what he gets up to during the year.

Grenadore
Red
Dark Leaf
The year was rounded off with the AGM in a new format followed by a visit by Don
Suttcliffe giving us a lecture on the new varieties.
The society has applied to the National Dahlia Society to sponsor a class in the
Northern Show with a trophy in memory of Ron Nelson.
As you will see later on in this newsletter the Annual dinner is to be held at
the Heaves Hotel on January 11th, so please try and get along to meet other
members and guests.
Congratulations to Ian Sutherland who passed the judging exam .
To all members who have shown, carried, judged, lectured, staged, and helped out
even in the smallest way congratulations and my thanks because you are the
people that make the society work.
And finally this newsletter has a few gaps so please send in items for the
newsletter anytime during the season. Im certain many of you have little
gems that would be of interest to members.

Trials Grounds Leeds
Five members met up at Endmoor to go to the Trials Grounds at Leeds on 27
Sept.
Having travelled approx 3 miles we were stopped and had to turn round as a car
accident had blocked the road.
led by Pathfinder Jimmy Jones and his sidekick Jimmy Heginbottom we soon got
back on the correct road.
Arrived at about 11:30am, we were greeted by Johnny Parkinson and his team and
treated to a first class tour unfortunately being a complete dunderhead with a
digital camera I wasted 3 hours of photographing.
Hopefully somebody else who attended will give some photos and a report at a
later date.
The journey home was easy except for Smiffy following Jim and Jimmy into
Skipton town centre and almost getting lost.

Trip To Holland (or going Dutch)
We set of for Holland about lunch time 28th
February, arrived at the ferry Newcastle to board for 5:30pm on the dot.
Had a good crossing, arrived at Amsterdam port of Ijmuiden.
I tried to change my phone to Dutch phone and ring Rinus Van Nuland, he was
going to meet us and take us around Holland, we looked down on the dock side
and Rinus was just below us waving (he had spotted us).
It was time to set foot on Dutch ground, we got back to the car and left the
ferry 10:00am on the dot and we met up with Rinus on the car park, after the
welcome and introducing Bill to Rinus together
we set off on the wrong side of the road, this is going to be an experience
first time driving on the opposite side of the road for me.
We parked my car in a small car park and set of with Rinus in his peoples van,
he was going to take us to the biggest flower market in the world Allsmear
market, we parked on the biggest car park I have ever seen for the people that
have not been there they have small trains running all over the place all
carrying flowers from one auction room to another we were walking between then
it was fantastic to be among all the flowers and plants.
From there we moved on to a Dahlia grower he is breeding low growing type
Dahlias called Dahliarets his name, Rene Rotteveel we had a cup of tea
with him the looked around his breeding seedlings and tubers, we thanked him
then we set of for the trial grounds of CMD gardens but there was not much to
see.
So then we headed of to Mr Geerlings Dahlias we met him and his son he took us
round his greenhouses, the sheds were full of Dahlias all ready for packing
and sending out orders.
After leaving Mr Geerlings we set of back to my car then I had to follow Rinus
back to his home at Anna Paluana Province one and a half hour drive.
Arrived at Rinus's home and introduced to his wife Jose and his two children
Rene and Sylvia, we had a look round the barn this is were he grows the tubers
about 2000 to make the
thousands of cuttings he takes, I think he takes 30, 000 cuttings in a season
he said he would start to take cuttings the first week in March the month
before he had put a Polly tunnel up 20ft by 50ft, the week before we arrived
there they had force 8 gales and it flattened it and twisted the metal work.
Then it was time to take us to the Hotel to book in Rinus introduced us to
Fred the hotel manager, Rinus left to have a brake from talking English back
to his wife and children.
We were shown to the room we were staying in for the weekend.
Next morning we were picked up by Rinus and taken to a Joiners shop we were
shown around a big warehouse full of small bungalows all made from wood all
fitted out with bathroom, kitchen, furniture all ready to be live in it was a
site to see all under one roof.
Next we had to get back to Rinus house to meet up with Manfred v Velzen and
his son of 4 years old, Manfred is good friend of Rinus, he came over to
Milnthorpe last year to look at my plot, we were going to see a show in a
small town near by, this show was for the farmers in this area to show off
there flowers there as a lot of displays all merging together to make it look
like a big park the amount of flowers on show was out of this world
(unbelievable) the flowers were so perfect they looked like wax, Daffodils
Tulips, Alliums and many more could not remember all there names not
forgetting Dahlias.
This was a very nice show plus all of the trade stands From there we
moved on to the farm of Jan Nuland the older brother to Rinus he takes
2,000,000 cuttings and sells them all over the world, he also grows his tubers
in the barn he is taking cuttings every day up to the end of May if you had
not seen it you would not believe it all grown in the dark, (unbelievable).
From hear we dropped Manfred off to pick his car up and follow us to the next
farm of Peter Komer he lived near by we were shown around Peters farm he sets
up about a 1000 tubers in the dark he had cuttings ready to take he had some
new varieties for me to try in England for him and maybe next year try them in
the trials ground for him.
After a cup of tea with Peter and Mary his wife we returned to Rinus's home to
discuses the dahlia trade from there he took us back to the hotel we had a
sample of the Dutch large beers with some of the locals then it was 1:45am
time for bed.
Next morning we were of to Den Holder this is the town were the Dutch Navy is
based Rinus is a good guide we were shown around the town we walked under a
submarine had a good look round it then he took us to Napoleons Fortress this
has just been discovered in the last 20 years it was like a museum it is still
being developed it was all underground next to the sea.
From hear you could see the Island of Texal (from the name Texal Sheep).
Next we set of to see the last farmer Marco Wisse on the way we stopped at an
old windmill we went to the top of it to have a look inside all the gearing
and the rollers were all made of wood, Arrived at Marcos a young man about 28
to 30 years old, his Dahlias all grown in the dark in the barn, so we must be
learning something by know no lights until the cuttings are taken.
It was nearly time for us to head back to the ferry first back to Rinus home
to say goodbye to his family and thank them for the hospitality they had given
us both, Rinus was to take us back to the docks one and a half hour drive, got
back at the ferry said the goodbyes and thanked him for every thing once more
and he said he would see us both in the summer.
Look Forward To the Return to Holland Maybe Next Year.

Lecture by Andy
Jamieson
Chairman Northern Dahlia Committee
In October, Andy
gave our society a lecture and slide show of tulips and around some of the major
dahlia shows, this was the first time Andy had given the society a lecture and
it was a very entertaining interesting and thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Unfortunately there some empty seats but we still had a good attendance.
Thanks must go to the members and guests that travelled from afar such as
Merseyside and Cheshire this support is very much appreciated, during the
evening a raffle was held and sandwiches were served.
So a first class evening Myself, I found the information given very useful as I
think did many others so may I thank all who attended and say to Andy thanks for
a very good evenings entertainment.

AMBLESIDE 2002
Once again another first class display, winning a gold
medal and a few pennies for the society funds.
All credit to Jimmy Heginbottom for setting up the baskets single handed (one
day we will come unstuck when Jimmy's not there) as he also supplied over
half the blooms as well.
A lot of interest was shown again in the dahlias.
I think the Waterlilies seem to be the main attraction, as many visitors
admired them, in particular the Asian visitors to the show.
Thanks to all the members who gave up their time to assist and to man the
stand I do hope that J J's recording will turn out alright.
